Our 2021 LAH Recipients
Anastasia (Annie) Goerl,
Annie has been diagnosed with stage 4 lung and liver cancer. Annie is a LD graduate and at age 26 is completing her final year of optometry school which entails completing clinical experiences and passing National Boards before becoming a licensed doctor of Optometry. Annie must manage the side effects of her chemotherapy as she also deals with the Covid-19 pandemic. Annie’s father passed away from lung cancer while she was in high school and she is all too familiar with the challenges of cancer.
Monica Flohr Family, Monica Flohr worked as a recess / instructional aide at LD’s East Hanover Elementary School before succumbing to esophageal and stomach cancer in March of 2020. Monica was loved by all and she leaves behind her family, Kylee (LDHS sophomore), Ethan (LDHS senior) and Colby (LDHS ‘20) and husband, Darrin. The LAH funds will be used toward medical bills that were not covered by insurance.
Laura Spangenberg. Laura has been battling the Covid-19 virus since testing positive in January. She was on a ventilator and she was treated with paralytic medications, steroids, antibiotics and Lasix. Laura was recently moved to a rehabilitation center for an anticipated lengthy recovery. Her two sons, Luke (LDHS sophomore) and Ben (LDHS '20) are suddenly without their mother at home and being assisted by Laura’s cousin, Alexis “Sam” Moore a former LDFH player.
Mariena Decker. Mariena, a ’15 LD graduate and LD field hockey player, was involved in a life threatening auto accident in June requiring life support for four days and then extensive rehabilitation from the head and face trauma surgeons. Mariena continues to receive physical therapy and she is currently on long term disability from the Vista School where she worked with young autistic children. In February, her mother, a retired 30 year LD elementary teacher, unexpectedly passed away.
